Tax rolls have traditionally been used as a “census substitute”—a list of names to show that someone of a certain name was in a certain jurisdiction, in this year or that. But tax rolls can be developed into so much more. This session demonstrates how to use tax rolls to separate same-name people, determine ages of men and date their marriages, establish times of death, identify parents and the maiden identity of wives, track migration, document inheritances when probate records are destroyed, and so much more!

Wow! I learned so much!
Wonderful information! Thank you.
Absolutely outstanding webinar. I have used tax rolls but think I need to re-analyze to see what I missed!
I’m sure I’m not the only one who wishes my ancestral lines connected up with those of ESM, and that we could partner with her in our research. Whenever I feel like I’m ‘stuck’ I like to go back and read her work, or listen to her videos, and remember that there’s probably always something more I can investigate.
Excellent, as always, Elizabeth! Tax records have been the key to answering several research questions, for me. Thanks for the confirmation and the additional tips that have me ready to dig back in to some of the tougher cases that left me wringing my hands!
Would this work with the Southern Irish tax records? Thanks in advance
Respect. I appreciate your inclusion of the time you spent working a problem. I recognize that you were probably responding to repeated inquiries into how much time you spend on your ‘intractable’ problems. I appreciate your sensitivity to your audience. I don’t suppose I will ever dig myself out of the morass my multiple trees have created, but I have a great deal of respect for the work you do, the education and hope you provide for those in your audience who do have the time to do excellent work.
This was excellent, as all of Elizabeth Shown Mills’ webinars are! Her pointers and case studies are so helpful. I’ve used tax rolls, but am now motivated to go back and look at them a lot more thoroughly. Having access to her lectures is worth the price of the webinar subscription, even without all the other wonderful talks in the subscription.
