Before 1865, free blacks, as well as runaway and emancipated slaves, migrated or escaped to northern states (and Canada), hoping for a “better life” with more opportunities. In this presentation, we explore some of the reasons for this movement and review some of the many helpful records left by these antebellum northern migrants.

Renata’s presentations are always informative. Her resource lists are a great help for other researchers.
Having 3 elusive ancestors, the idea of looking for manumission documents never occurred to me before hearing Renate’s presentation. Thank you, thank you!!
Fabulous webinar! It was certainly worth waiting for! I’m so glad I have a membership because I’ll be viewing this one many times!!! Thank you Geoff and Marian! You two are always so gracious!!!
Thanks, new research info given.
Thank you for the handout. Great event.
Excellent presentation. The information Renate Sanders shared was worth the wait. I was not aware of the manumissions being used to prolong servitude in the North. The context she shared about Free Persons of Color is very helpful. There were additional records, like directories, that I have not utilized effectively. I will watch this again.
I learned so much that will help me in my search for my ancestors and to understand the trials and tribulations they faced even after being manumitted.
Amazing presenter!
