Starting in Britain in the mid-eighteenth century, the Industrial Revolution transformed the world and the way in which millions of people lived. Its effects were more revolutionary than any other development in human history since the discovery of agriculture more than 5,000 years ago. The lives of ordinary workers and their families were radically changed as patterns of work and trade were transformed and goods came from farther afield.
