This presentation examines the lure of gold discoveries in various Australian states in the 19th century. Many people travelled down under to try and make their fortunes but didn’t realise just how hard it was working on Australian gold fields. Mining records and newspapers can be used to trace miners and to understand their way of life.

Shauna is always a great speaker. I now have lots of research to follow up on my mining ancestors in Australia. Examples of her own heritage are always interesting and very helpful.
One branch of my family were miners in Nevada. And Arizona. And California. But for some reason one of my grandfathers sailed to Australia (where my father was born in 1910) and then came back again to the US. Wish I knew more of that story.
Fantastic webinar, such a lot of new sites to investigate. I suspect my Ggandfather was in Ballarat area, as he came to NZ in 1862 as a Miner and his to be wife lived in Creswick, Jane came out to NZ aged 18 and went straight to where he was in Clyde, Central Otago. But I have to fine him in Victoria, William Walker, rather hard. Thanks so much for that helpful lecture.
Excellent & very informative
opened up new ideas of where to look
Very helpful ideas for me to try to locate my French ancestors who immigrated to Victoria in 1854.
Very informative webinar! I have lots of miners in my family tree from South Australia, Victoria, and Western Australia. I look forward to doing more research on them! Thank you!
Always wonderful to learn from Shauna.
