About this webinar

It’s not just how much DNA you share with your matches–it’s how much DNA they share with EACH OTHER that give needed clues to build family tree connections between your matches. MyHeritage’s Shared DNA Matches tool has been giving us that insight for a long time, and now other sites do, too. How do you leverage that data to answer your DNA questions? Come see how it works in real DNA case studies!

Key points and insights

In this dynamic and information-packed webinar, “See How It Works: Shared DNA Matches Find Ancestors,” renowned genetic genealogist Diahan Southard offers a practical, step-by-step guide to leveraging shared DNA matches to identify unknown relatives and uncover ancestral connections. This presentation is an essential resource for genealogists of all experience levels eager to transform raw DNA data into actionable insights. With clarity and enthusiasm, Southard demystifies the Shared Matches and Shared Matches of Matches (SMoMs) tools, showing how they can be used to break through research roadblocks—even in cases with limited or no family trees.

Key Takeaways:

  • Shared Matches Are Your Starting Line: Southard emphasizes that the Shared Matches tool—available on all major DNA testing platforms—is the core resource for creating genetic networks. By identifying individuals who share DNA with both the test-taker and each other, genealogists can isolate specific branches of the family tree. This foundational grouping can illuminate the correct lineage path even when matches lack detailed family trees.
  • SMoMs Reveal Hidden Relationships: The Shared Matches of Matches tool, affectionately dubbed “SMoMs,” adds another layer of insight by showing how matches relate to each other, not just to the user. SMoMs help genealogists zero in on which parts of a tree are most relevant, especially when working with partial or ambiguous data. This technique is especially potent when paired with strategies like building bubble groups or using generation estimates based on centimorgan ranges.
  • Genealogy Completes the Puzzle DNA Begins: Southard underscores that while centimorgan values suggest possible relationships, only genealogical records can confirm the actual connection. She provides real and hypothetical case studies to demonstrate how DNA data must be supplemented by traditional research, such as descendancy mapping and surname tracking, to turn “matches” into known cousins and, potentially, to identify elusive ancestors.

To fully appreciate and implement these methods, viewing the complete webinar is strongly encouraged. Southard’s accessible teaching style and visual examples bring clarity to complex concepts, offering valuable insights whether you’re confirming family legends or solving a mystery match.

Call me dazed and confused right now, but also excited and enthused. I am now waiting for the replay so I can do what was suggested: Find my mystery person and go from there. I need to find the relationship between my biological family and my adoptive family. I pray it is possible with the method given today. In any event, I will be using this process in future for less complicated matches. Thank you. Excellent presentation.
