Building on our previous exploration of AI in genealogy, this webinar showcases more advanced techniques for harnessing AI’s power in family history. We’ll cover sophisticated methods for data analysis, pattern recognition, and predictive modelling, showing you how to take your family history research to the next level. You’ll also learn about cutting-edge AI tools and how to apply them to uncover hidden connections and insights within your family tree. Ideal for those who are already familiar with basic AI applications, this session will expand your toolkit with innovative approaches to family history research.
In the engaging Legacy Family Tree webinar titled “10 Advanced Ways to Use AI in Family History”, genealogist and tech-savvy presenter Andrew Redfern dives deep into how artificial intelligence can revolutionize genealogical research. Speaking to a global audience, Redfern guides viewers through ten innovative, hands-on applications of AI, moving beyond basic usage to demonstrate truly transformative tools and workflows. Whether creating timelines, analyzing historical documents, or synthesizing data across platforms, this session offers genealogists a glimpse into the powerful, layered capabilities of today’s AI tools—and how to use them effectively in real-world research scenarios.
Layered Approach to AI in Genealogy: Redfern introduces a layered framework—input, extraction, context, storytelling, visualization, and feedback—to guide genealogists in blending AI seamlessly into each phase of their research. This analogy, likened to crafting a multi-ingredient cake, helps demystify how different AI tools work together to enrich the genealogical process.
Tool-Specific Strengths and Strategic Use: The webinar demonstrates how to leverage various AI platforms—ChatGPT for narrative drafting, Claude for diagram generation, Perplexity for web-based research, and Transkribus for handwriting transcription. Redfern emphasizes selecting tools based on task strengths, highlighting Claude’s diagramming capabilities and Perplexity’s superior web search functionality.
Creative Presentation and Sharing of Research: Attendees learn how to turn data into compelling content, such as interactive timelines, audio stories using 11 Labs, and formatted blog posts. Redfern showcases techniques for generating visual outputs, including WordPress-compatible HTML and even custom GPTs for surname pattern analysis across multiple family trees.
For anyone passionate about family history, this webinar is a must-watch. It’s packed with real-time demonstrations, ethical considerations, and practical tips that elevate AI from a novelty to a valuable research companion. Viewing the full session provides a deeper understanding of how to combine tools creatively, iterate for better results, and ultimately share family stories in engaging new formats.

Great presentation! I hope you do make a blog post summarizing these AI programs. I think it would be a wonderful resource!
You changed my mind about AI and genealogy research. I completely see the power and time saving abilities.
Only a “5” because the rating doesn’t go any higher. I can’t remember the number of times I went “Holy ______” (fill in the blank as you prefer) as Andrew went from tool to tool. Approaching 80, I am still finding it is possible to teach old dogs new tricks – this webinar was proof! New to the concept of AI, this will make researching so much quicker and more effective than I ever imagined. This needs to be required viewing for all genealogists and family historians regardless of the skill level!
This was definitely one of those webinars you need to watch again because there was good information that needs to be watched again to refresh!!!
One of the best webinars I have watched on this subject! I am only at the beginning level of AI usage, but I have learned so much about what I can do with AI now and as my skills increase that I am just blown away! I highly recommend this webinar!
This went beyond my present thinking. But his previous webinars have made me try very basic questions that were quite successful in answering questions and solving problems (all of which were filed as part of the citation for the statement, change of information, etc.). I feel that at sometime I will try other AI than Copilot as I am pushed into the 2020s.
I haven’t jumped into the AI arena yet, but this webinar provided me with a few ideas I can use.
It was a little over my head as a complete novice regarding AI, but it inspired me to explore, which I think was the goal of the speaker. As a Legacy member, I can rewatch the webinar and take my time going through it.
