About this webinar

What do we do with ancestors whose names don’t “match” from one record to the next? Or those who pose the opposite problem: too many men or women of the same name? This session examines a litany of social customs and naming patterns that cause ancestors to be known by different names—then offers techniques and strategies by which we can establish that any two records do or do not apply to the same person. A variety of case studies demonstrate the problems and the methods we can use to overcome them.

Great presentation as usual. So many complexities in how names were given and changed over time. Had heard the term Patronymic or Paternal names, but never had it so thoroughly explained, with variations by culture and land. Thank you. Would love to get a chance to see the original Census records for my relatives, but remember from an earlier presentation that they were not always carefully stored or protected.

ESM is amazing! She never disappoints her audience. What amazes me is her wealth of knowledge re genealogy. EVERY webinar she presents covers another window of knowledge we, as genealogists need to know. To add to her knowledge, ESM has a very pleasant, enjoyable, and personable way of presenting her webinars. Sort of gives me the sense of sitting across a table from her. In my opinion, of all the presenters I have heard, ESM is the easiest to listen to and learn from. Brava! Encore!

Excellent as always. I will be re-watching to take more notes. This might have been the webinar to help me break the brick wall I’ve worked on for five years.
