Over twenty-five years ago, the codification of genealogy standards revolutionized the discipline of genealogy. In recent years, major advances in artificial intelligence have given rise to powerful new tools and techniques for genealogists and family historians. In this presentation, we demonstrate through several examples how the responsible use of AI—in full compliance with genealogy standards—can expedite and enhance your genealogy research and writing.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping the landscape of genealogical research, offering powerful methods to analyze records, overcome brick walls, and streamline complex tasks. In a recent presentation hosted by the Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG), genealogy expert David Ouimette demonstrated how researchers can responsibly leverage cutting-edge AI tools while adhering to the Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS). Ouimette explored the dual landscape of general-purpose AI platforms (such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Google Gemini) alongside specialized tools built specifically for family history research. Emphasizing that AI acts as an agent under the direction of the researcher, the session illustrated how leveraging dynamic tools—from agentic multi-step task planning to complex handwriting recognition—can dramatically enhance research quality without compromising ethical boundaries or strict standards.
Integrating AI into your genealogical toolkit can save countless hours of manual labor, letting you spend more time analyzing findings and connecting with ancestral stories. To fully appreciate these powerful demonstrations and explore practical prompt frameworks, viewing the complete webinar provides invaluable real-world examples and step-by-step guidance.
Genealogists are strongly invited to delve into the accompanying syllabus, which contains curated links to specialized custom GPTs, general-purpose platforms, and foundational guidance for ethical AI integration.

I have not yet used AI except for Google AI searches via voice. I'm still trying to decide the simplest way to get started, which tools, etc. Currently, my main interest is determining the best software to use in image editing my large collection of family photographs. But I plan to rewatch this to learn more, as well as many other classes in the Legacy library & elsewhere.
Outstandingly up to date and within my 85 year old amateur understanding. Not too technical and that is appreciated. Appreciate the syllabus as always. Will watch again and then go play with it.
This is what we need from online webinars- cutting edge ways to tie the standards to efficient research methodology. We want to research the past, but need more tools to reach the increasingly vast catalogues of online digitized records. Well Done, BCG for ask David Ouimette to share new insights. (I am a subscriber to ClaudePro and have used all the various instances (versions) as they have come out; I also have a paid level for ChatGPT but didnt know about the GPTs) as well as using Gemini. So lots here
Stunning is the word that comes to mind! I've experimented with AI, particularly Claude, and soon--after I watch David's presentation at least two more times to absorb all the potential for AI--I'll be able to do more experiments! Brilliant webinar!
I learned about other available AI applications and how they compare. I use ChatGPT, and I’m looking forward to exploring the other AI tools.
Very informative! I hate that everything had to go by so fast but you know when you've only got an hour. What can you do?
An absolutely amazing amount of the most useful information. Thank you David. Although the information was presented VERY clearly I will probably go back and watch the presentation again for my own use.
Parts of AI are great.I use it for research. CHAT GPT gave me places to look for records i have never thought of.
