Key points and insights

Whether you are a newcomer to genealogy or a seasoned researcher looking to break through stubborn "brick walls," this webinar provides a roadmap for elevating your craft. Presented by Jill Morelli for the Board for Certification of Genealogists, the session explores essential techniques for data collection and analysis. By shifting focus from simply accumulating names on a pedigree chart to rigorously applying the Genealogy Standards, participants can transition from level-one data gathering to level-three research, characterized by a deep understanding of indirect evidence and critical source evaluation.

Key takeaways from the session include:

  • Refining Research Questions: A well-crafted research question is the foundation of successful investigation. To ensure clarity and focus, limit the question to one known, unique person and a single, specific objective. Over-complicating questions with too much background information or predefined answers often hinders progress rather than helping it.
  • Mastering Evidence and Context: Achieving depth in research requires more than just finding records; it requires understanding them. This includes meticulously distinguishing between original source content and personal commentary, assessing the independence of evidence, and recognizing how historical context—from local geography to economic conditions—influences the information found within documents.
  • Objectivity and Ethical Practice: Researchers must remain vigilant against cognitive biases, such as confirmation bias, presentism, and romanticism. By maintaining a neutral approach and thoroughly documenting research findings, genealogists can ensure their conclusions are grounded in evidence rather than assumptions or desired outcomes.

The journey to becoming a better genealogist is an ongoing process of self-improvement and continuous learning. To fully grasp these concepts and apply them to your own family history projects, watch the entire presentation for a comprehensive breakdown of the techniques discussed. Furthermore, the webinar syllabus serves as an invaluable tool, featuring a specialized self-assessment guide. This resource allows researchers to honestly evaluate their current skills across various genealogical standards, identify specific areas for growth, and create a targeted educational plan to improve their research capabilities. By engaging with these additional materials, you can take a proactive step toward solving complex genealogical problems and refining your skills for the future.

Excellent presentation! I would love for Jill to teach a weekly class on these techniques so we could practice. Loved seeing the interplay with RootsMagic software and would love to see more of the same.

I completely agree with the comment that Jill Morelli is an excellent teacher. She makes you want to do better and I found myself wanting to do the homework of reassessing myself as a genealogist and devising a plan to improve. This is one of the presentations I will go back and watch again! Thank you very much.

I enjoyed the presentation and the details to collecting data. I have done much of the process of recoding but I haven’t made notes on the search process. Thank you for a more in depth look at documents.

My first seminar. Much more technical than I had anticipated. I tend to be more of a Family Search pedigree “researcher “ but the concepts presented stimulated me to do more

Jill's examples of Level I, Level II, and Level III genealogical thinking was very helpful. I'm not at Level III yet, but I'm a lot further along (away from Level I) than I thought, which enables me to feel good about my progress. Thanks much Jill !!
