Key points and insights

In this webinar, professional genealogist Mia Bennett reveals the rich, often-overlooked treasures buried in British newspapers. With an engaging and methodical approach, Bennett guides researchers through the art of mining historical newsprint to uncover vital clues about their ancestors’ lives. Covering sources, search techniques, and real-world examples, this session is an indispensable resource for anyone aiming to enrich their family history with context, color, and hard-to-find details. From obituaries and marriage announcements to crime reports and business ads, newspapers can offer far more than meets the eye.

Key Takeaways from the Webinar:
  • Beyond BMDs: Expand Your Newspaper Research Horizons: While most genealogists search for births, marriages, and deaths, Bennett emphasizes the value of looking further—into funeral reports, thank-you notices, employment mentions, and even musical selections at weddings. These details help confirm identities and deepen narratives, especially for common names or uncertain records.
  • Strategic Search Techniques and OCR Workarounds: The webinar dives deep into effective search practices for major archives like the British Newspaper Archive and Findmypast. Bennett shares expert tips for overcoming OCR inaccuracies, using wildcards, and leveraging advanced filters, including date range, publication location, and keyword combinations. She also highlights how AI-powered platforms like MyHeritage’s OldNews are revolutionizing access to accurately transcribed content.
  • Unique Content and Unexpected Discoveries: Bennett illustrates how newspaper research can reveal business dealings, criminal records, lost items, sports participation, and even emigration clues. For instance, reports on agricultural fairs, long-lost relative columns from overseas newspapers, and rare photographs offer insight into lives that might otherwise remain undocumented. She also underscores the power of reading entire editions for context—helping researchers grasp what life was like during pivotal family events.

I do not think she mentioned that if you are looking for Glasgow newspapers, then try Google. They started a project but did not complete it, so nothing is indexed. The Edinburgh Scotsman has it own archive and the National Library of Scotland also has newspapers., Also try an address eg grandparents lived in a tenement for 30 years the gossip I picked up on the neighbours.
