Key points and insights

This dynamic presentation introduces "From Data to Dialogue with AI," an engaging five-part series designed to help family historians transform raw genealogical data into compelling narratives. Professional genealogist Fiona Brooker and experienced speaker Andrew explore how artificial intelligence can bridge the gap between static research and active storytelling. By treating AI as an interactive research assistant rather than a simple search engine, genealogists can streamline their workflow, clean up records, and tailor their family histories for diverse audiences—ranging from young relatives to academic publication readers.

  • Onboarding Your AI Assistant: Establishing clear working guidelines and project goals upfront ensures the AI acts as a true collaborative partner, keeping research organized while avoiding unnecessary corrections and hallucinations.
  • Tailoring Content to Your Audience: Before drafting stories, researchers should define their target audience, intended purpose, and preferred storytelling format—such as chronological narratives, thematic insights, or interactive family newsletters.
  • Standardizing Output for Consistency: Defining clear conventions for date formats, location names, callout boxes, and source citations helps maintain a polished, professional structure across multi-generational family history projects.

Redfern and Brooker are the best teachers of the ways to use AI for genealogy on earth. Their casual, relaxed, and friendly approach to those watching and learning makes one want to do what they suggest by filling out the workbooks to learn and improve their genealogical skills, with and without AI. Their respect for one another and the flow between them makes the sessions delightful and engaging. Their fabulous workbooks/syllabi include the content of what they're presenting and space to write/participate.
