A researcher’s number one goal is to find ancestors for their client or their own family and share their story. Within the story oral history is followed, critical records and resources will be discovered which helped guide the research. This session will take attendees through the challenges, successes, and the continued unanswered questions of researching an African American family from enslavement to freedom through the states of VA, PA, OH, and MI.

This is one of the best presentations on AA genealogy that I’ve seen.
Brilliant webinar with lots of interesting information.
Great speaker.. plenty of good searching tips
This webinar/seminar was excellent because the person was so knowledgeable as well, she had a great attituded – you could tell she was excited about sharing her knowledge and she gave a lot of great advice to help others research their family history. I will continue to follow her work, and her advice.
This will help when my African American friends ask about searching for their enslaved relatives. Thank you!
Great info from Shelby. Looking forward to more webinars.
Dr. Shelley’s presentation is inspirational. Oral history is very important in my family. Using oral history with records can open brick walls if you have a strategy, stay flexible, ask for help, and go beyond online sources. I participated in the Mildred Brand case with the Nicka Smith group. This story continues to unfold and presents a powerful example of protracted research.
Interesting webinar about what you hear from oral history and how to prove it from records. Enjoyed listening to her methods.
