Key points and insights

The genealogical landscape is being revolutionized by artificial intelligence, and the webinar "5 Ways to Use AI to Find Family and Final Records at MyHeritage" offers a compelling roadmap for navigating this new frontier. Presented by Cathy Wallace, an expert in cemetery record digitization, the session demonstrates how AI serves as a modern "Rosie the Robot"—a smart, sassy, and helpful assistant capable of unlocking hidden narratives from death certificates, obituaries, and funeral programs. By focusing on these critical "final records," researchers can move beyond cold dates to uncover the rich, human nuances of an ancestor’s departure. This presentation highlights the power of modern tools to synthesize data from over 1.5 billion records, turning the daunting task of unraveling family history into an accessible and even exhilarating endeavor.

  • Advanced Transcription and Analysis: MyHeritage Scribe AI, which debuted in early 2026, provides genealogists with a powerful engine to transcribe ornate handwriting on old death certificates and personal letters, while simultaneously offering historical context and linguistic translations to ensure every detail is captured accurately.
  • GPS-Enabled Cemetery Insights: Through the seamless integration of the BillionGraves app and AI-driven analysis, researchers can utilize precise GPS coordinates to walk directly to specific headstones in vast cemeteries and use Scribe AI to decode weathered symbols, such as fraternal or military emblems, that help define an ancestor's unique social identity.
  • Narrative Storytelling and Visualization: AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini empower users to transform concise, factual obituaries into vibrant biographical narratives or rhyming poems, which can then be enhanced with AI-generated watercolor imagery or animated "Live Memory" videos to create engaging family histories for future generations.

To fully harness these innovative techniques, genealogists are encouraged to view the complete webinar replay, which offers live demonstrations and sophisticated prompting strategies for various AI platforms. The session emphasizes the importance of cross-referencing AI findings with traditional primary sources to guard against "hallucinations" and ensure the highest standard of genealogical proof. Additionally, exploring the comprehensive 17-page syllabus included with the resource is a must for any researcher looking to implement these AI strategies with precision. By taking advantage of these expert-led materials, researchers can effectively bridge the gap between dusty archives and the living legacy of their ancestors, ensuring their family stories are preserved with both accuracy and heart.

This webinar was so professionally presented that it was very easy to follow even though it contains a mountain of information. The directions and procedures were clearly explained and illustrated. The many examples reinforced the content and its applications. I'm going to check out Cathy's other Legacy/MyHeritage webinars.

I was a naysayer for anything AI until this webinar. Cathy pointed out the positive things and also said anything with AI should be documented and verified. That makes it a very useful tool for Genealogical research. Loved the program!

What a WONDERFUL seminar! Kathy had such great graphics, a clear presentation and her enthusiasm was contagious. I might want to view this over and over. Her syllabus is jam-packed with the important information I would want to preserve, so there were only a few notations I added of my own on my notes. This is well worth viewing. I will be getting so much more use out of my MyHeritage subscription now, too.
