Lorna Moloney

Lorna Moloney is a renowned forensic genealogist and Irish heritage specialist whose work has significantly advanced the field of genealogical research, particularly within the Irish context. Based in County Clare, she combines a deep academic foundation with practical expertise to help individuals uncover and understand their ancestral stories. Moloney holds a BA (Hons) in History, Politics, and Social Studies from the University of Limerick her genealogy research focused on the anglicisation of the MacNamara family in Clare from the 13th to 17th centuries. Her academic achievements are complemented by a postgraduate diploma in executive management, a certificate in teaching and learning from University College Cork (UCC), and an MBA from the Technological University of the Shannon. In 2015, she became a Certified Forensic Genealogist (CAFG) in Dallas, marking her formal entry into this specialized branch of genealogy.

Professionally, Moloney serves as the resident genealogist at Dromoland Castle, one of Ireland’s most prestigious heritage venues. Here, she provides tailored ancestral consultations that attract clients from around the world seeking to explore their Irish roots. Her previous roles include project genealogist for University College Cork’s “George Boole 200” initiative and senior programme coordinator for adult continuing education at UCC. In these capacities, she has led educational programming in skills development, genealogy, and cultural heritage, delivering workshops and webinars that reflect her expertise in Irish surnames, DNA research, and emigration patterns.

Moloney is also a well-known media figure in genealogical circles. She produces and hosts “The Genealogy Radio Show” on Raidio Corcabaiscinn, a long-running series that features discussions on Irish history, family research, and folklore. The show is accessible via podcast and YouTube, extending her reach to an international audience. Her scholarly interests include medieval Irish history, Brehon law, and visual culture, and she has published research on topics ranging from Gaelic lordships to the Claddagh fishing community. She frequently lectures at academic institutions such as Oxford, NUI Galway, and University College Cork.

Her forensic work incorporates archival document analysis, palaeography, and photograph examination to aid legal cases, citizenship applications, and personal identity tracing. Whether assisting clients with dual citizenship applications, reuniting families, or mentoring budding genealogists, Moloney brings a uniquely interdisciplinary approach. Her ability to weave historical depth with modern investigative methods makes her a leading figure in contemporary Irish genealogy.

Lorna is currently working on The Donelson Scots Irish Project evaluating the journey of the Scots Irish in the US from the Seventeenth century and how pioneering legacies shape landscapes and sources.
