About this webinar

“…Ordered by the Court that Cullen E. Sugg oversee the road in the room of Josiah Lawrence and that he with the following hands to wit. Josiah Lawrence, Matthew Williams, Benjamin Batts, Jesse Herring, William Deloach, Sugg Fort, Elias Fort, Hardy Grisard, Elias Lawrence, William Watson, George James, Alexander Gooch and Jesse Andrews, James Lawrence and all other hands residing within the bounds of said road keep said road in repair according to law…”

[Robertson County Tennessee Minute Book 7, p 422]

What do these men have in common? Learning to recognize and understand information contained in county court minute books and order books along with other types of routine court records will require effort to determine the appropriate law regarding the entry and the prevailing tradition of the community. In order to have a better understanding of the laws in place regarding the construction and maintenance of roads, we should review the state laws in place at the time.

For DAR purposes: If your ancestor was a supervisor of roads between 1776 and 1782, if will qualify him as a Patriot with Civil Service .

Great idea. Thanks for bringing to mind that in the smaller 18th & 19th century communities one’s neighbors influenced (and recorded) the community events.

Great webinar! Learned a lot and it gave me ideas for researching some colonial era NY state ancestors who have few records. Thanks to Mark, Geoff, Marian & Legacy! (also grateful for the chance to stay connected during this crazy time 🙂

had absolutely no knowledge of this type of record, what a great resource! Thanks

Hope the information is of use in Minnesota and Wisconsin. It’s always good to learn more about court records.

I could listen to Mark Lowe all day long, but had to leave for another webinar I couldn’t watch at a later time. I’m glad I have Legacy webinars, I will watch this from start to finish later.

I could listen to Mark Lowe all day. His knowledge is deep, but he keeps his explanation simple. Many thanks for inviting him to speak again.

I enjoyed this webinar very much.

I found my ancestors in lists of road crew members in the local newspaper with the amounts they were paid for their work. This was in Washington state in the early 1900s.

I had found some of this info but did not know what to do with it. Now I can go back and use it. Very easy to follow talk.

I had no idea these minute and record books existed, or even that people were required to work to maintain the roads. Having such crews makes perfect sense, of course, because somehow those roads were created and maintained. Amazing, truly amazing! Thank you so much.

I had very low expectations when I saw the title of this webinar, but I found it to be both interesting and informative! Thanks!

    I learned a lot! Thanks!

I learned lots of good tips. I have heard of road crews & know of an ancestor who worked on his, but didn’t realized how much more Info I could glean from those records. Thanks so much for sharing.

I liked how Mark brought up suggestions for so many new and different records to read and search.

I wouldn’t have ever thought to use these records – great webinar!

I’d never considered most of his suggestions. Thanks for a new road to follow!

I’m from Tennessee, but I live clear on the other side of the country now. It is such a pleasure to listen to Mark speak just like I still do!! I have put my toes into the water of road crew and jury duty records and have just a bit of experience using them. Mark is correct–they are full of interesting tidbits about how our ancestors lived and worked together.

    Very Good

    very good

Very good content. I’m not very familiar with the subject, so this is an excellent jumping off point to find additional records. Would love to see an additional presentation of this to go into more depth of exactly how to search for this type of data, a kind of “Road Crews for Dummies” kind of lesson, starting with a particular person and the logic behind how to search for the laws of the time and how to find/interpret the records. Excellent presentation!
