Data management is not just an organizing system. Data management is a critical analytical tool. Research standards tell us that conclusions must be supported by “proof.” Standards insist that “proof” is more than “a document”—rather, it’s a conclusion based on a body of evidence created by reasonably exhaustive research. Meeting this standard creates a paradox: The more data we gather, the more confused we get!—unless we maintain that body of evidence in a way that enables us to digest it, analyze it, and correlate it with everything else we’ve found. This session presents a framework for projects of all types and sizes, building on sound research practices that carry us smoothly from problem analysis to problem resolution.

Excellent timing! I’m currently writing a 2nd edition on my Polish great-grandparents because of newfound information that proved my hypothesis for the first edition. This time I’m analyzing every person in every record, including all those in the descendant’s report from a German relative. He’s been to the Polish archives, and I went there to get the lay of the land. Every time I write, I review everything for accuracy. Elizabeth is the best teacher.
I can’t wait to try this process so I have a way of keeping my research organized. I can’t tell you how many records I have printed out or researched again because I forgot I had done it previously. I’m headed to Elizabeth’s website to look at a few more examples of her Research Reports. This was a great webinar that I will watch again.
Another amazing webinar! Thanks!
Very informative and detailed. Sets up a system where no information is lost and at the same time can be found easily. The handout is a great resource also.
A lot of information! Precise! To the point! How to tackle this process? One bite at a time.
ESM’s presentation style is always easy to follow and succinct. Her discussions regarding the why of her process are helpful, as she walks us through each step. The recorded webinars with the following Q & A’s, almost gives one the experience of having her as a private tutor. I enjoy the webinar format, and as a library professional highly recommend that library patrons that I work with, subscribe to Legacy Family Tree Webinars.
As always Elizabeth gives thorough and relevant information.
I gleaned a lot from this webinar today and will definitely implement and tweak what I do with my research reports. I so look forward to Elizabeth Shown Mills webinars! I always learn ‘many somethings’ and a new perspective on tackling a specific problem or methodology. I surely appreciate her and all her knowledge and experience that she so generously shares with us. She really never disappoints! Thank you and may God bless Elizabeth, and you all at Legacy Family Tree, greatly.
