Legalese. Boilerplate. Obsolete laws. Ancestral idiosyncrasies. The documents our ancestors created are full of such traps. This session uses two typical documents from different regions to illustrate, line by line, how to sort chaff from wheat, interpret deceptive language, and develop clues.

I enjoy the presentation from Elizabeth. Have research lots of deeds and wills, but might have to relook at some of these again. This presentation was very information. Thank you.
Sure am glad I have a Webinar membership. MIssed the live presentation, and once again caught the video. This one has made me realize just how complex some of the situations can be once we drop our assumptions and do the kind of research. I always learn from EMS, and I learned a LOT this time around! I have an odd situation in the same general area EMS is working on here that I am going to go back to… and I suspect start from scratch. Thank you, Elizabeth, for sharing your experience & skill with people like me. I really want to get this one sorted, and I got all kinds of ideas for how taking some new tacks and extra steps might help me get there!
So glad to have a membership– I missed the live presentation. I can’t wait to hear ESM great wisdom!!
As always, Elizabeth Shown Mills provides a very in-depth study of her topic, this time Deeds and Wills. Her lessons are not for the faint of analytical heart, but definitely worthy of rewatching, notetaking, applying, revisiting, rewatching, and reapplying. I’m so grateful Elizabeth Shown Mills shares her knowledge with us and for Legacy Family Tree webinars. Once again proving that the Legacy webinar membership is very worthwhile! Thank you Geoff and thank you Elizabeth!
It is a fascinating study packed with great situations. Makes you think!
The lack of my knowledge leads to feeling a bit overwhelmed by all I need to learn at this late stage in my life, but I am so very grateful to Elizabeth Mills for sharing her time and knowledge with us. This class, in particular, is helpful to me as I finally get back to a 1920s murder case I started working on 10 years ago. The laws in the state and the language are something I hope to understand with the resources given. I’m also grateful for all the folks who have made these webinars possible to view.
I’ve enjoyed Elizabeth’s sessions for decades: in person, on cassette& CDs, and, now, digitally. Each time I am awed by the depth of her knowledge, but also her speaking skills and ability to concisely and clearly give examples and explain the nuanced points. This session was particularly informative for me. Thank you for enabling us to have these opportunities to share her knowledge!
ESM webinars are always so informative, interesting, and entertaining. Her in-depth knowledge and the amount she packs into each webinar usually results in having to view the webinar more than once to get all the tidbits she shares. Always worth watching!
